Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif believes that while Suryakumar Yadav’s numbers may suggest one batting position, India should remain flexible with his role depending on how the innings unfolds. Kaif feels that although Suryakumar has traditionally been more comfortable at No. 4, there are situations where promoting him to No. 3 could significantly benefit the team in T20Is.

Statistically, Suryakumar’s recent record is mixed. In 2024, he batted at No. 3 in 10 out of 19 T20I innings, scoring 156 runs at an average of 22.29 and a strike rate of 134.48. In his nine innings at No. 4, however, he managed only 62 runs at a modest average of 6.89. Despite those numbers, Kaif feels context matters more than rigid roles in the shortest format.

Speaking on Star Sports, Kaif explained that Suryakumar should be promoted if the opening pair gives India a strong start. If the openers bat for six to seven overs and set a solid platform, Kaif believes Suryakumar should walk in at No. 3 to maximise his impact. More deliveries, he feels, allow India’s premier T20 batter to play his natural game and control the tempo of the innings.

Kaif also suggested a tactical alternative if an early wicket falls. In such scenarios, Tilak Varma could be sent in to absorb pressure against the new ball, allowing Suryakumar to arrive slightly later and face a more settled bowling attack. According to Kaif, Suryakumar’s current form is not a major concern, stressing that he is only one substantial innings away from rediscovering his rhythm.

Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, India have enjoyed a largely successful run, losing just four T20Is and remaining unbeaten in bilateral series. Kaif highlighted Suryakumar’s leadership qualities, praising his communication with teammates and his habit of discussing improvements even after victories.

Kaif believes this mindset reflects Suryakumar’s evolution into a mature leader. His passion, clarity, and ability to connect with players have strengthened India’s T20 setup, making him not just a key batter but a dependable captain as well.
