Mohammad Nabi’s attempt to make an impact in Afghanistan’s crucial Champions Trophy clash against Australia ended in disappointment as he was run out dramatically at the Gaddafi Stadium on February 28. The experienced all-rounder, who had just arrived at the crease after the dismissal of captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, managed only a single run before an unfortunate mix-up led to his exit.

The mishap took place in Afghanistan’s 37th over. The fourth ball of it was short down the leg side by Spencer Johnson, which Nabi allowed to go behind him. Wicket-keeper Josh Inglis dived to save the ball with his left hand but spilt it, and it went behind him. Seeing a chance for a sudden single, Nabi naturally went for a run.

But non-striker Azmatullah Omarzai, seeing that Inglis had regained quickly, responded in time and sent Nabi back. By then, it was too late. Inglis’ direct throw at the stumps was wide, but Johnson, demonstrating marvelous awareness, picked up the ball and performed a crisp underarm flick, striking the stumps with precision.

The third umpire verified that Nabi was clearly short of his crease, securing his dismal dismissal. It was an unwarranted gamble in a high-pressure match, surrendering Afghanistan’s sixth wicket at a critical moment.

With Afghanistan battling for a semi-final qualification in their Champions Trophy début, the pressure was tremendous. They were struggling at 195 for 6 after 39 overs when Nabi was dismissed, with Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib remaining to steady the ship. A solid finish was imperative to their chances, as a defeat would be a major dent in their campaign.
