Anti-corruption and betting allegations have emerged for the first time in the ongoing National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) inquiry involving Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan. The Lahore High Court has noted that the agency is investigating matters related to online betting and gambling.
On Thursday, the court dismissed Rizwan’s petition challenging notices issued to him by the NCCIA. According to reports from Pakistan, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Aalia Neelum directed the cricketer to approach the agency, explain his position, and respond to the notices.
Rizwan’s lawyer, Qazi Umair Ali, told the court that the allegations against his client were false and baseless. He claimed Rizwan was called to a hotel lobby after the Lord’s Test and questioned without being formally served a notice. The lawyer also said Rizwan’s mobile phone was taken into custody after the cricketer was told it would be returned within three hours.

Ali further argued that corruption-related allegations involving international cricketers should fall under the jurisdiction of the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit. However, he said no case concerning Rizwan had been referred to the ICC’s anti-corruption body.

The court was informed that the NCCIA notice concerns an inquiry into online betting and gambling. Rizwan has challenged the agency’s jurisdiction and questioned the basis of the investigation, arguing that the notice did not clearly identify an allegation or specify what illegal activity he was suspected of committing.
Earlier, reports stated that Rizwan had submitted a written response through courier, seeking clarification over the reasons for his summons and the continued retention of his mobile phone.

Rizwan and Pakistan Test opener Imam-ul-Haq appeared before the NCCIA earlier this month. Initial reports linked the inquiry to alleged “dressing room leaks”, while the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially described it as a “disciplinary” investigation. The NCCIA has not announced any final finding against Rizwan or Imam, and the inquiry remains ongoing. Reports have also noted that the agency falls under Pakistan’s Interior Ministry, headed by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
