The memories of the 2021 India vs. Pakistan T20 World Cup match remain vivid for cricket fans around the world. In that historic encounter, Pakistan secured their first-ever victory against India in the tournament’s history, leaving Indian supporters heartbroken. As anticipation builds, these two cricketing giants are set to face off again on Sunday, June 9, during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Reflecting on the intense rivalry between India and Pakistan, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan shared insights into the impact of their 2021 victory. Speaking at an event in the USA, Rizwan highlighted how that win against India significantly altered the lives of Pakistani cricketers.
“For me, it was all a first, whether it be playing in a World Cup or in such a big match. So I was feeling quite normal; I didn’t think this was any different from any other match. But when we won, that is when I realized what we achieved. In Pakistan, say I go shopping somewhere, people wouldn’t take money,” Mohammad Rizwan recounted, as reported by NDTV.

He continued, “Then I stopped going out for shopping because they just weren’t taking money from us; they were all commending us for beating India. Everyone I met was commending us for the win. Once, when I went to someone’s room, they had the match playing on television and said that they watch it every day.”
The last time India and Pakistan clashed in the T20 World Cup was in 2022, where the Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, secured a nail-biting four-wicket victory on the final ball of the match.
The upcoming match in Nassau County promises to be another thrilling chapter in this storied rivalry. Pakistan, the champions of the 2009 T20 World Cup, have consistently been one of the most formidable teams in the tournament’s history.

They have reached the semi-finals in six out of the eight editions and finished as runners-up in both 2007 and 2022.
