As India gears up to finalise its squad for the upcoming five-Test series in England, all eyes are on veteran pacer Mohammed Shami and his fitness status. While his IPL 2025 campaign with Sunrisers Hyderabad has been underwhelming—managing just six wickets in nine games—Shami’s focus is clearly shifting towards red-ball cricket, though doubts remain about his readiness for the high-intensity England tour.

Recent reports suggest that Mohammed Shami is currently not in the selectors’ plans for the Test series, with the panel inclined towards introducing younger talent. Shami, however, hasn’t officially ruled himself out. In an interview with The Times of India, he admitted that while he’s not yet match-ready, he is working tirelessly behind the scenes. “I’m doing hard work, strength training, bowling long spells, and gradually building up my red-ball rhythm,” Shami said.

He acknowledged the workload demands of Test cricket and pointed out the packed schedule ahead, saying, “The series is right after the IPL, and there’s also an India ‘A’ tour. It’s hectic for everyone. For red-ball cricket, the workload needs to be increased.”
Despite concerns, Shami still believes that a fast-bowling pair of himself and Jasprit Bumrah is vital to India’s success in English conditions. On transitioning formats, he noted that while shifting from T20s to Tests isn’t overly difficult, preparation is key.

“If you’re smart, it takes about 15-20 days to build up for the longest format,” he explained. “It’s about understanding your stamina and your strengths in Test cricket.” Reflecting on his disappointing IPL, Shami admitted, “I didn’t perform the way I expected. But I’ve always believed in bouncing back.”
His dedication remains clear, and his experience could yet play a pivotal role if selectors call upon him. Finally, Mohammed Shami offered some heartfelt advice to young pacers like Mayank Yadav, who are dealing with injuries.

“Injuries are part and parcel of a fast bowler’s life. I’ve faced both major and minor issues. The key is understanding your body—recognizing the signs of stress, managing your workload, and knowing when to recover. Mental strength is just as important as physical recovery.”
