Mohammed Shami delivered a brilliant ball that got the better of Ben Stokes, dismissing the English all-rounder during the ICC World Cup 2023 match. Stokes struggled with Shami’s pace and bounce and ultimately succumbed to the delivery. Attempting to maneuver to the leg side, Stokes completely missed the ball, handing Shami his first wicket of the game against England. Unfortunately, Ben couldn’t even open his account. Shami’s inclusion in the lineup came after Hardik Pandya’s injury.

While India had not been able to post a towering total, the significance of these two swift wickets could not be overstated. England’s pursuit of a semi-final berth in the World Cup hung in the balance, and these breakthroughs intensified the drama and competition of the game.

The England bowlers, led by David Willey, played a pivotal role in restricting India to a total of 229-9. Willey, a left-arm speedster, was instrumental in this feat, finishing with figures of 3-45, which included the prized wicket of Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, who could only muster a nine-ball duck.

England’s decision to bowl first in Lucknow was a testament to their determination to secure a victory, keeping their slim hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive. Fast bowler Chris Woakes and leg-spinner Adil Rashid played their part by taking two wickets each, while the fielders displayed remarkable commitment by diving and making crucial stops, transforming England’s overall performance.

The defending champions, England, had a challenging start to the tournament, languishing at the bottom of the 10-team table with four defeats from five matches. However, this spirited performance against India rekindled their hopes of making a comeback in the competition.

Despite losing three wickets early on and slipping to 40-3, the undefeated Indian team showed resilience as skipper Rohit Sharma steadied the innings. He played a crucial role in a 91-run partnership with KL Rahul, who contributed 39 runs. Although Rohit survived a close call on 33 when an LBW decision was reversed in his favor upon review, the opener’s tenacity ensured that India reached a total of 229 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs. The closely fought contest between these two cricketing powerhouses added to the intrigue and excitement of the 2023 World Cup.
