Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is likely to make a much-anticipated return to the national team after an extended break. Shami last represented India in the ODI World Cup final in 2023, a match etched in cricket history for its intensity and drama. Since then, the experienced bowler has been absent from the international scene, despite participating in domestic cricket.

Fans and selectors alike have eagerly awaited his comeback, and recent developments suggest it might be just around the corner. According to reports, Shami is closely monitored by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) as he continues his recovery. After undergoing surgery, the pacer faced a minor setback with swelling in his knee, which kept him out of action during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

However, he has been actively participating in Bengal’s Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, showcasing glimpses of his trademark skill and determination. Shami is set to play in Bengal’s upcoming clash against Haryana, a match that could solidify his readiness for the upcoming India-England series.

To further assess his fitness and form, members of the BCCI selection committee are expected to attend this crucial game. The India-England series promises to be an exciting contest, featuring five T20Is followed by three ODIs. Matches will be played across iconic venues, starting with T20Is on January 22, 25, 28, 31, and February 2 in Kolkata, Chennai, Rajkot, Pune, and Mumbai.

The ODIs are scheduled for February 6, 9, and 12 in Nagpur, Cuttack, and Ahmedabad, respectively. Shami’s potential return could add a wealth of experience to India’s fast-bowling arsenal, which currently faces challenges due to injuries. Jasprit Bumrah, recovering from a back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is another key player under observation.
