Mohammed Shami’s absence looms over both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the 2024 T20 World Cup, as the seasoned seamer recovers from surgery on his right Achilles tendon. According to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, Shami’s return is anticipated during the home series against Bangladesh later this year, marking a significant milestone in his rehabilitation journey.

Confirming Shami’s progress, Jay Shah stated, “Shami’s surgery is done, he is back in India. His return is targeted for the home series against Bangladesh.” This suggests a cautious approach by the Indian cricket board, prioritizing Shami’s full recovery over rushing him back into competitive cricket.

Shami’s absence during the recent Test series against England underscores the challenges he faces in regaining match fitness. With pivotal Test assignments, including the away series against Australia, looming ahead, the BCCI intends to ensure Shami’s optimal readiness, thus ruling out his participation in white-ball cricket for the time being.

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) following a specialist consultation in London. Rahul experienced discomfort in his right quadriceps during the first Test against England in Hyderabad, sidelining him for the remainder of the series.

Updating Rahul’s status, Jay Shah mentioned, “KL Rahul needed an injection, he has started rehab and is now recovering at the NCA.” The progress indicates a positive trajectory for Rahul’s return to action, potentially clearing him for participation in the upcoming IPL.
