Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami’s ongoing fitness concerns cast doubt on his availability for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Australia. Despite hopes of a strong comeback, Shami’s recent performances and lingering issues have led the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to hesitate in clearing him for international duty until he regains full fitness.
Shami’s return to competitive cricket in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 ended on a disappointing note as Bengal was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Baroda. Struggling to find his rhythm, Shami conceded 43 runs in his four overs during the match. His economy rate has been a concern throughout the tournament, exceeding 10 runs per over on three occasions.
Although he picked up 11 wickets in nine matches with an economy of 7.85, Shami hasn’t displayed the sharpness that once made him India’s strike bowler. The veteran last represented India in the ODI World Cup 2023 final and was expected to bolster the Indian attack for the BGT.
