Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami has begun bowling again at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, raising hopes for his return to international cricket. However, a definitive date for his comeback remains unclear. Shami underwent surgery on his right Achilles tendon in February and has been undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of medical professionals at the NCA. While the exact details of his bowling are unknown, reports suggest he’s releasing the ball without discomfort.
“Shami has started bowling,” confirms Mohammed Shami’s childhood coach Badruddin. “He’s not bowling with a full run-up or full tilt, but he’s started releasing the ball without any discomfort in the nets. This is a positive sign as it signifies the beginning of his bowling activity.”
The BCCI recently announced India’s home schedule, including a two-Test and three-T20I series against Bangladesh in September-October. While BCCI secretary Jay Shah previously mentioned targeting the Bangladesh Tests for Shami’s return, the final call will depend on his progress.

“There’s no doubt he’ll be back in Indian colors soon,” says a source of News18 show is close to Shami. “You’ve seen glimpses of his progress through social media. He’s working hard, but more clarity will emerge once he resumes bowling at full tilt and we see how his body reacts.”
Considering Shami’s six-month absence from competitive cricket, the NCA, similar to other players returning from long injuries, might prioritize his return in shorter formats (T20Is or ODIs). This approach aims to gradually ease him back into the game.

Whether Shami can be match-fit for the upcoming limited-overs tours of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in July remains uncertain. However, the three T20Is against Bangladesh in October are a potential target for his return.Β A cautious approach is being taken to avoid risking Shami’s fitness, especially considering India’s crucial five-Test tour of Australia later this year.
“Shami is pivotal for the Australia tour,” says a well-placed source of New18. “The NCA has a history of reintroducing players through T20Is and ODIs after long layoffs. Easing him back is crucial, especially for a fast bowler. However, if his progress continues smoothly in the nets, the Bangladesh Tests could mark his return.”

Shami’s rehabilitation program is rigorous, including a range of mobility exercises, core activation, strength building, and compound movements. This comprehensive approach aims to restore his fitness and prevent future injuries.
Shami’s dedication and the progress he’s made since being unable to walk without crutches are encouraging signs. Indian cricket fans eagerly await his return to the national team, hoping he can regain his peak form and contribute significantly in the upcoming challenges.
