Mohammed Shami’s return to IPL 2025 action was anything but ordinary, as the veteran pacer made a dramatic impact in the early moments of the high-stakes clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. SRH skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl first, handing Shami the new ball—and the India pacer wasted no time.

On the very first delivery of the match, Shami struck with a classic seam-up delivery that moved just enough to find the edge of CSK opener Shaik Rasheed’s bat. The ball flew to Abhishek Sharma at slip, who made no mistake. It was a dream start for Hyderabad and a perfect exhibition of Shami’s skill.

But just as quickly as he delivered a moment of brilliance, Shami produced a rare and bizarre blunder. On the very next delivery, the seasoned bowler committed a no-ball, without even releasing the ball. During his run-up, he accidentally clipped the stumps at the non-striker’s end, leading the umpires to signal a no-ball. According to the rules, any contact with the stumps by the bowler, whether via foot or falling clothing—after the ball is in play but before the delivery stride is completed, results in a no-ball.

Fortunately for Shami and SRH, the resulting free hit didn’t cause much damage, with only a single run coming off it. The seasoned quick held his nerve to end the over, conceding just seven runs, including the early breakthrough.

At the time of reporting, CSK were 37 for 1 in the fourth over. Ayush Mhatre was looking in fine touch with a brisk 28 off 14 balls, while Sam Curran was holding fort at the other end with 8 runs to his name.
With both teams struggling at the bottom of the table, this fixture is pivotal in reigniting their playoff hopes—and moments like Shami’s opening over could prove decisive in the final equation.
