In the ODI World Cup 2023, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami emerged as a standout performer, concluding the tournament as the highest wicket-taker and playing a pivotal role in guiding India to the summit clash. However, recent revelations shed light on Shami’s extraordinary feat, indicating that the 33-year-old battled a chronic heel issue throughout the World Cup, relying on regular pain injections to endure the pain.

A teammate from Bengal disclosed this information, stating, “Shami has a chronic left heel issue. A lot of people don’t know that he took injections regularly during the World Cup and played the entire tournament through pain, but you must understand that as you grow older, recovery from each niggle or big injury takes that more time,” as reported by News 18.

While Shami initially sat out during the early stages of the World Cup, the Indian team’s decision to bring him in, especially after Hardik Pandya’s injury, proved to be a blessing. Shami’s stellar performances played a crucial role in propelling India to the final of the marquee event.

Currently, the Indian cricket team is engaged in a two-match Test series against South Africa. However, Shami’s absence from the squad due to an ankle issue has been keenly felt. In the first Test against the Proteas, where India suffered a defeat by an innings and 32 runs, the void left by Shami’s absence became evident as the team struggled in all departments, lacking the X-factor that Shami brings to the bowling attack.

The revelation about Shami’s perseverance through injury adds a layer of appreciation for his contributions during the World Cup, showcasing not only his skill but also his determination to play through adversity for the success of the team. As the Men in Blue continue their campaign in South Africa, they undoubtedly miss the invaluable presence of the seasoned pacer.
