Mohammed Shami‘s mother, Anjum Ara, had to be admitted to a hospital due to nervousness and fever on Sunday (November 19) when India locked horns against Australia in the final of the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The match took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Team India suffered a heartbreaking 6-wicket loss at the hands of the team from Down Under. Nothing much went India’s way in the final as Australia thoroughly dominated it. After winning the toss, the Pat Cummins-led side bowled out the hosts for a modest total of 240 despite half-centuries from KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. Captain Rohit Sharma also played a quickfire knock of 47 runs.

The total, however, was not enough for Team India to seal a third World Cup title. Riding on Travis Head‘s imperious century, Australia recovered from 47 for 3 to chase down the total in 43 overs. Head scored 137 runs off 120 balls and shared a huge stand of 192 runs with Marnus Labuschagne who remained unbeaten on 58.

As Team India fought it out against Australia on the field, Anjum Ara found it tough to deal with the pressure. Her health deteriorated due to nervousness and she was taken to a hospital from where she was referred to a higher center, according to The Times of India.

“She was admitted to the hospital due to fever and nervousness. Now, her condition is normal,” Dr Mumtaz, cousin of the India pacer, said.

The report further stated that an atmosphere of excitement prevailed in the bowler’s ancestral Sahaspur Alinagar village in Amroha ahead of the final. Big screens were set up on public grounds and prayers were held in mosques and temples in many villages of the district.

“Shami is a diamond and he has proved his worth by performing well in the World Cup. He has made our district proud,” said Mohammed Shami’s cousin.

The right-arm pacer has had a stunning campaign in the World Cup. Despite not playing the first four games, he finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker. In just 7 matches, he picked up a staggering 24 wickets including 3 five-wicket hauls. Even in the final, he dismissed David Warner on his very first delivery of the game but failed to inspire India to a famous win.
