India and England began their three-match ODI series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, with the visitors opting to bat first after winning the toss. The match also marked the return of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami to ODI cricket after a year, and he made an immediate impact with the ball. His standout moment came when he clean-bowled Brydon Carse with a delivery that nipped in sharply, leaving the batter with no chance as the stumps were rattled.

Earlier in the game, England’s openers, Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, took an aggressive approach, putting the Indian bowlers under pressure early on. Their positive intent allowed England to score freely in the powerplay, setting a solid foundation for the innings. However, just when it seemed like they would take complete control, a moment of brilliance in the field turned things around.

Phil Salt, who was looking dangerous, attempted to steal a third run in the ninth over but fell victim to Shreyas Iyer’s sharp fielding. Sprinting in quickly, Iyer collected the ball and fired a precise throw to the keeper, catching Salt short of his crease. His dismissal proved to be the breakthrough India needed, and the momentum began to shift.
Making his ODI debut, Harshit Rana then produced an impressive spell, striking twice in quick succession. He first removed Duckett for 32 before dismissing Harry Brook for a duck, leaving England suddenly reeling at 77/3. Joe Root and Jos Buttler attempted to rebuild the innings, with Root playing a steady knock while Buttler took on the scoring responsibilities.

Although Joe Root failed to capitalize on his start, Buttler looked comfortable at the crease, reaching his half-century and appearing set for a big score. However, just when it seemed like the England captain was ready to accelerate, Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya combined to remove him.
As England looked to push towards a competitive total, Mohammed Shami produced another moment of magic. In the 40th over, he bowled a length delivery that jagged in sharply. Carse, attempting a wild heave, completely misjudged the movement and missed the ball entirely. The stumps were shattered, and Shami celebrated his first ODI wicket in over a year, further denting England’s hopes.
