The one-off Test between India and Afghanistan in New Chandigarh witnessed a fiery on-field moment as Mohammed Siraj and Rahmat Shah exchanged words during Afghanistan’s first innings. With temperatures hovering around 38 degrees Celsius at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, the contest became heated both literally and figuratively as emotions briefly spilled over in the middle.

By the time the incident occurred, India had already established complete control of the match after posting a massive first-innings total of 564. Afghanistan, in response, found themselves under immense pressure, with wickets falling regularly around Rahmat Shah. The experienced batter adopted a defensive approach to shield the tail and help his side avoid the follow-on.

Mohammed Siraj, known for his intensity and competitive spirit, appeared frustrated by Shah’s resistance. The Indian fast bowler has built a reputation for bringing aggression and energy to every spell, whether in international cricket or franchise tournaments. His ability to challenge batters mentally is often a key part of his game.

The flashpoint arrived during the 53rd over of Afghanistan’s innings. Rahmat Shah defended a delivery solidly off the back foot, prompting a reaction from Siraj. As part of his follow-through, the pacer walked towards the batter and exchanged a few words. Shah initially responded with a smile, seemingly unfazed by the verbal challenge. However, Siraj continued the conversation, creating a brief but noticeable moment of tension between the two players.

Commentators covering the match also discussed Afghanistan’s strategy at the time, particularly Rahmat Shah’s defensive mindset. With wickets tumbling at the other end, the batter appeared focused on survival rather than scoring quickly. The discussion centred on how long Afghanistan could continue with such an approach while trying to reduce the deficit.

Despite Shah’s determination, Afghanistan struggled to build meaningful partnerships and was eventually bowled out for just 152 runs, conceding a huge first-innings lead. Rahmat was the lone bright spot in the batting lineup, scoring a fighting 60 off 135 deliveries. His innings included nine boundaries and a six, showcasing remarkable patience against a disciplined Indian attack.

Ironically, Siraj finished the innings without a wicket despite bowling with pace and aggression throughout his nine-over spell. The star performer for India was debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who produced a sensational spell of 6/33 in 22 overs. His match-defining performance dismantled Afghanistan’s batting order and further strengthened India’s dominance in the Test.
