Usman Khawaja struggled to find his rhythm on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Jasprit Bumrah applied early pressure, testing the Australian opener with his precision. Khawaja managed to survive the initial spell, but Mohammed Siraj eventually broke through in the 19th over. Bowling a full-length delivery, Siraj drew Khawaja into a hesitant push, and the ball slipped past his bat to crash into the top of the off-stump.
This dismissal was particularly significant for Siraj, who entered the second innings under scrutiny after a lacklustre performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 30-year-old pacer had failed to deliver in the first innings, conceding 122 runs in 23 overs without taking a wicket. Experts had questioned his spot in the playing XI, adding to the pressure.

However, Siraj responded with discipline and intent on Day 4, claiming Khawaja’s crucial wicket. His signature “finger-on-the-lips” celebration followed as the crowd erupted with chants of “DSP, DSP,” a nickname inspired by his aggressive and spirited bowling.

India’s pacers delivered a strong start with the ball, a much-needed boost for the visitors. Bumrah, as always, was menacing, dismissing Sam Konstas for just eight runs and coming agonizingly close to removing Marnus Labuschagne. In the 18th over, Bumrah delivered a full ball that struck Labuschagne’s pads, prompting a loud appeal.

Despite umpire Michael Gough’s denial, India opted for a DRS review. The replay showed the ball pitching in line, but the decision stayed with the umpire due to the “umpire’s call.” India will aim to capitalize on this momentum, bundling out Australia early on Day 4. With a manageable target in sight, the visitors hope to chase it down and secure a 2-1 lead in the series.
