Mohammed Siraj’s rise as a premier fast bowler in Indian cricket has been as much about his grit as it has been about inspiration, and according to his elder brother Ismail, a significant part of that inspiration comes from none other than Virat Kohli. The former Indian captain’s influence, especially in terms of fitness and mindset, has played a pivotal role in shaping Siraj’s journey.

Siraj featured in all five Tests of the recently concluded series against England, bowling over 185 overs and finishing with an impressive tally of 23 wickets. With Jasprit Bumrah sitting out the crucial final Test as part of workload management, Siraj became the frontline enforcer — and he delivered in style.

Speaking to The Times of India, Ismail revealed how Siraj’s fitness transformation is rooted in Kohli’s influence. “He wants to live Abbu’s dream. That’s what drives him,” Ismail said. “Fitness is at another level now, and the credit goes to Virat bhaiya. He’s more than a mentor — like an elder brother. The aggression, hunger, and discipline — Siraj learned it all from him.”

Ismail also recalled Siraj’s low point during the 2018 IPL season, where his form was questioned. “At that time, Virat stood firmly behind him. He believed in Siraj’s potential, backed him at RCB and in the Indian team. Siraj always says he owes his career to him.”
In a lighter vein, Ismail shared how Virat’s pep talks even impacted Siraj’s diet — once a biryani lover, he now eats it rarely, choosing discipline over indulgence.

And that discipline paid off. With England just 35 runs away and four wickets in hand, Siraj’s stunning three-wicket burst sealed a dramatic win, helping India level the series 2-2.
