India sealed a thrilling five-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final on Sunday, September 28, but the victory celebrations were overshadowed by controversy. The Men in Blue did not receive the trophy during the presentation ceremony, refusing to accept it from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister.

Despite repeated attempts by Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) officials to persuade the team, Naqvi insisted on presenting the trophy himself, leading to India celebrating their historic ninth Asia Cup title without the silverware. Reports from Cricbuzz indicate that Naqvi has now agreed to hand over the trophy, but only if a formal ceremony is arranged where he alone presents the trophy and medals.

Given the tense political environment and the events surrounding the final, such a function appears unlikely. Meanwhile, Indian players are quickly moving on to upcoming commitments.

Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma have been included in the squads for the second and third unofficial ODIs against Australia A, while Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are preparing for the Test series against the West Indies, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad.

An ACC meeting is scheduled for September 30 at 4:00 PM IST, with the trophy issue expected to be a key topic of discussion. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also planning to raise a formal protest with the ICC during its Annual General Meeting on November 24.

For now, the Asia Cup trophy remains at the Dubai hotel where Naqvi is staying. He has reportedly been asked to deliver it to the ACC office in Dubai Sports City, from where it will be forwarded to India. However, it remains uncertain whether Naqvi will comply or even attend the meeting, leaving the trophy handover unresolved for the time being.

This standoff marks one of the most unusual episodes in Asia Cup history, blending cricketing triumph with off-field political tensions.
