Pakistan Cricket Board chairman and politician Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is set to end in April 2027, with his prospects of securing an extension reportedly uncertain. According to Cricbuzz, several ACC members are unlikely to support extending his two-year term, while Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal is understood to be interested in taking over the position.
The ACC presidency traditionally rotates among the five Full Members — India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan — with Bangladesh next in line. An extension can be granted, but it requires broad agreement among the Executive Board members. The current situation makes such an extension difficult, according to the report.
Naqvi took over as ACC president in 2025, succeeding Sri Lanka Cricket chief Shammi Silva. His appointment was for a two-year term. Before him, Jay Shah served as ACC president and remained in the position for three years after the members unanimously agreed to extend his tenure, with Sri Lanka also agreeing to give up its turn.

Naqvi’s tenure has included several politically sensitive episodes involving India and Pakistan. The 2025 Asia Cup, for instance, was played against the backdrop of strained relations between the two countries. The tournament eventually went ahead in the UAE after the ACC confirmed Dubai and Abu Dhabi as venues.
The Asia Cup final later produced an unusual trophy presentation dispute. After India defeated Pakistan, the Indian team declined to receive the trophy from Naqvi, who is also the PCB chairman and Pakistan’s interior minister. The presentation did not take place, and the trophy was subsequently kept at the ACC office in Dubai.

The leadership question now comes as Bangladesh prepares to potentially take its turn at the ACC presidency. Cricbuzz reported that Tamim Iqbal has conveyed his interest in succeeding Naqvi. The former Bangladesh captain became BCB president in June and would represent the next member in the rotation.
For the ACC, the transition will be significant as the organisation continues to oversee major tournaments and development programmes across Asian cricket. The eventual decision on the presidency will depend on discussions among the Full Members and the required agreement on the next appointment.

With Naqvi’s current term scheduled to conclude in April 2027, the focus is now on whether the ACC follows its usual rotational process or reaches an agreement on an extension. At present, available reporting indicates that Tamim Iqbal is positioning himself for the role, while support for extending Naqvi’s tenure appears limited.
