The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) found itself at the centre of both serious discussions and online ridicule after chairman Mohsin Naqvi met Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Monday, January 26, to brief him on recent developments surrounding the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the situation involving the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

While the meeting itself carried significant importance—given ongoing uncertainty over Pakistan’s participation—Naqvi’s post-meeting social media update quickly stole the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. In a now-viral tweet, the PCB chairman mistakenly claimed he had met former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif instead of the incumbent PM, Shehbaz Sharif.
“Had a productive meeting with the Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. Briefed him on the ICC matter, and he directed that we resolve it while keeping all options on the table,” Mohsin Naqvi wrote, adding that a final decision would be taken by Friday or the following Monday.

The error was glaring, considering Nawaz Sharif last served as Pakistan’s prime minister between 2013 and 2017, while Shehbaz Sharif currently holds office. The tweet was later deleted and corrected, but not before it triggered widespread trolling on social media, including a humorous reaction from former India cricketer Aakash Chopra.

Beyond the online amusement, the meeting delivered clarity on a key issue. The Pakistan government has approved Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup match against India, scheduled to be played in Colombo. Sources quoted by IANS confirmed that Pakistan would go ahead with the fixture, despite earlier speculation of a possible boycott.

Reports had suggested Pakistan could withdraw either from the high-profile India match or the entire tournament in solidarity with Bangladesh, who were replaced by Scotland after declining to travel to India over security concerns. However, following discussions at the highest level, the PCB appears set to proceed with the tournament.
As preparations continue, Pakistan’s World Cup build-up remains a mix of administrative drama, political consultation, and unavoidable social media scrutiny.
