Former England spinner Monty Panesar has praised India’s bold decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, calling the 26-year-old a “natural leader” who flourishes when given responsibility. The announcement, made by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, confirmed that Rohit Sharma would be relieved of the ODI captaincy, with Gill set to lead India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19.

The move sparked mixed reactions among fans and former cricketers, but Panesar hailed it as a masterstroke. He believes the leadership role could unlock Gill’s full potential and set the stage for one of his finest ODI series.
“It is a great decision. Making him captain while Rohit Sharma is still in the team allows him to get guidance and support. We have seen that he is a natural leader, especially during India’s tour of England,” Monty Panesar told ANI.

Monty Panesar also highlighted Gill’s temperament under pressure, suggesting that responsibility brings out the best in him. “When you give him responsibility, you see the best of Shubman Gill. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is given the T20I captaincy as well, because he thrives when entrusted with leadership,” he added.

For Gill, the focus is firmly on building momentum for the 2027 ODI World Cup. With India expected to play around 20 ODIs before the tournament, the young captain is determined to use this series as a stepping stone toward ultimate success.
“It is the biggest honour to lead your country in One Day cricket, especially a side with such a strong record. I hope I can do well. We have about 20 ODIs before the World Cup, and obviously, the ultimate goal is to lift the trophy in South Africa,” Shubman Gill said in a BCCI video statement.
