India put on a commanding performance in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, to level the five-match series 1-1 with a thumping 336-run victory. This wasn’t just a win—it was a statement. It also marked India’s first-ever Test victory at Edgbaston, a venue where they had struggled historically, having lost seven and drawn one of their previous eight matches since 1967.

The dominant win showcased India’s all-round excellence and their fearless approach against England’s much-hyped ‘Bazball’ philosophy. Former England spinner Monty Panesar praised the visitors for not just matching England’s aggression but outclassing them in every department.
“India have shown they are not afraid of Bazball. There’s great belief and excitement within the team. Shubman Gill’s leadership has been top-class, and his batting has been equally impressive,” Monty Panesar told IANS.

Calling the Edgbaston win a “historic moment,” Panesar believes the confidence from this performance will serve India well heading into the third Test at Lord’s.
He was particularly impressed with India’s bowling unit, which he said has found a strong rhythm. “To take 20 wickets in English conditions is a big achievement. And with Jasprit Bumrah set to return at Lord’s, their attack will become even more formidable.”

Panesar reserved special praise for Akash Deep, who rattled the English top order in both innings and finished with a match haul of 10 wickets. “Akash Deep is a genuine new-ball bowler. He bowled beautifully, making crucial breakthroughs early on. It was a remarkable performance from him,” he added.
While India celebrated a landmark win, Panesar didn’t shy away from critiquing England’s shortcomings. He pointed out the struggles of young spinner Shoaib Bashir, who conceded 286 runs across the match.

“Shoaib Bashir leaking that many runs is a serious concern. The fact that he couldn’t even deliver consistent maiden overs shows the pressure India put on him. England need to re-evaluate their spin options,” Monty Panesar concluded.
