In any format of the game, a good fielder can be expected to play a crucial role in determining the fate of the match. Dropped catches by fielders in a tense situation can demand the chances of the team winning the game. On the other hand, if a player is successful in taking a blinder, the fielding team gets a slight edge and can dominate in the match. A lot of these situations have happened in most of the seasons of IPL.
It also depends on what fielding position a particular player is standing in, as it plays a crucial role in him getting many chances to grab a catch. Generally in T20Is, the teams prefer to put their best fielders at those positions on the boundary line where he is most likely to take a catch. Most of the time it is either long-on or long-of positon.
In this article, we will be listing out 5 players who have grabbed the most catches in IPL history:
5. Virat Kohli – 76 catches
The RCB skipper Virat Kohli has been playing for the franchise ever since the inaugural edition of the cash-rich league. He has taken 76 catches in the league history so far. These catches have come in 190 innings, which makes his catch per innings ratio 0.4. Virat has been leading the team since the 2013 season but is yet to take the team over the line as a captain.
4. AB de Villiers – 83
The Proteas batsman AB de Villiers is known for having one of the safest pairs of hands in world cricket right now. He has grabbed 83 catches in 122 innings so far. His catch per innings ratio of 0.68 is the highest for any player in the history of the tournament with a minimum of 30 catches. AB de Villiers has been playing for RCB since 2011 and was earlier part of the Delhi squad.
3. Rohit Sharma – 89
Rohit Sharma, being the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI), is mostly seen fielding inside the circle. He has taken 89 catches in the 200 games he has played so far. He holds the record for winning the most titles in the cash-rich league as a captain. His catch per innings ratio of 0.445 is still decent given that he fields mostly at those positions where there are fewer chances of taking a catch.
2. Kieron Pollard – 90
The West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has often been seen taking incredible catches near the boundary ropes. His height also helps him in plucking up catches for fun, and this is the reason why he has been seen fielding at the long-on or long-off region. He has taken 90 catches in the 164 innings of the league till now with a ratio of 0.548.
1. Suresh Raina – 102
Suresh Raina has often been considered as one of the best fielders India has ever produced. With 102 catches in IPL, he is the only player to grab over 100 catches in the cash-rich league. Raina has played most of his IPL matches for Chennai Super Kings and led the Gujarat Lions team in 2016 and 2017. He has a catch per innings ratio of 0.531 in a total of 192 innings he has featured on the field.
