Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has denied reports claiming that MS Dhoni is looking to acquire a major stake in the IPL franchise, while confirming that the legendary cricketer already owns a small shareholding in the team.  According to Cricbuzz, Dhoni owns more than one lakh shares in the franchise, which he reportedly purchased privately some time ago. While the figure may sound significant, his actual ownership remains extremely small compared to the overall shareholding structure.

Based on the reported figures, Dhoni’s stake is estimated to be around 0.01–0.02% of the company. In comparison, the Srinivasan family reportedly holds a controlling stake of more than 55%, while public shareholders own over 30 crore shares, accounting for nearly 40% of the total.

Following the recent IPL franchise valuations, including the reported sales of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals for around ₹16,000 crore, Dhoni’s existing stake could be worth approximately ₹2.6–3 crore.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Dhoni was attempting to increase his ownership to between 15% and 20%. Such a move would have significantly increased his influence over the franchise. However, CSK has continued to deny that any such discussions have taken place.

It is also important to note that CSK is a private company, meaning its shares are not traded freely on the open market. Despite his limited ownership, Dhoni remains one of the most influential figures at CSK. As the franchise’s most successful player and its biggest face, his influence extends well beyond his shareholding, particularly on cricket-related decisions.

Dhoni has reportedly been involved in discussions surrounding CSK’s search for a new head coach following Stephen Fleming’s departure, as well as potential player trades ahead of the next auction. Even after missing the previous season due to injury, he was believed to have remained involved behind the scenes. How actively Dhoni shapes CSK’s next season, and how he works alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the incoming coach, will be closely watched.
