Rohit Sharma’s struggles in the ongoing Test series against Australia have been a hot topic of discussion. The Indian skipper has faced relentless criticism for both his captaincy and lacklustre batting performances. Since rejoining the team for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India has yet to register a win, and Rohit’s leadership has failed to inspire confidence.
Rohit’s tactics on the field often appear lacklustre, leaving fans and experts questioning his approach. Adding to the pressure is Rohit’s underwhelming form with the bat. Batting in the middle order, he managed scores of 6, 3, and 10 in his first three innings. Seeking a turnaround, he returned to the top of the order in Melbourne, where he’s historically been more successful.
However, his comeback to opening ended in disappointment, with Rohit falling for just 3 in the first over after mistiming a pull shot. This stroke has often brought him both success and downfall. Former chief selector MSK Prasad didn’t hold back his criticism during commentary on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test.

MSK Prasad highlighted India’s earlier failures in the series against New Zealand, where the team suffered three consecutive losses, marking an unprecedented low in Indian cricket history. Prasad also noted that Rohit’s struggles with the bat carried over into Australia, affecting both his confidence and the team’s morale.
“Heading into this series, we were already struggling. Rohit had no runs in the New Zealand series, and here too, he missed the first game. Bumrah led the side well in his absence. But Rohit’s continuous failures have clearly impacted his captaincy,” MSK Prasad remarked.
The former selector further criticized Rohit’s lack of proactive decision-making, especially during key moments in the ongoing match. “In this Test, for instance, he allowed Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah to bowl extended spells with the second new ball while Sam Konstas was dominating. This has been emblematic of his struggles as a captain,” MSK Prasad added.

Rohit’s woes extend beyond this series. After India’s T20 World Cup victory in the Caribbean, the team suffered a historic ODI series loss to Sri Lanka after 28 years, followed by a crushing whitewash against New Zealand at home. This defeat broke a 12-year streak of dominance. With mounting criticism and pressure, Rohit’s leadership and form are under intense scrutiny as India looks to salvage pride in the remainder of the series.
