Indian youngster Tilak Varma has swiftly established himself as a prominent prospect in global cricket through recent standout performances. The 20-year-old showcased his prowess for Mumbai Indians in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and carried his form to his maiden international appearance against West Indies.

Varma marked his debut for Team India in the ongoing T20I series against West Indies and emerged as one of the standout performers. His tally of 139 runs across three T20Is reflects an impressive average of 69.5, potentially securing his place as a regular in India’s T20 squad.

Former Indian team selector MSK Prasad acknowledged Varma’s remarkable T20I performances and expressed the opinion that the youngster could evolve into an essential asset for the Indian One Day International (ODI) lineup in the future. Prasad emphasized Varma’s exceptional List A record as a significant factor in this assessment.

“Look at his List A record for Hyderabad. He has played 25 List A games and has an average of 55 plus. Five hundreds and five half-centuries. It means at least 50 per cent times he is converting fifties into hundreds. A strike rate of 100 plus,” MSK Prasad stated.

He further suggested the possibility of considering Varma for the ODI squad, especially if Shreyas Iyer is unavailable. However, MSK Prasad expressed confidence that Varma’s talent would secure him a consistent role in India’s white-ball squads across various formats.
