Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene reacted on the humiliating loss faced against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, MI had caught SRH well short of a good T20 total. But SRH bowling did not allow Mumbai to score freely and got them all out with 41 runs short of the target.

MI recorded their lowest IPL score yesterday

Speaking to the media after the match, Mahela Jayawardene reacted in his usual calm and serene demeanor. He refrained himself from severely criticising the whole team but did put out stern words which will make the players introspect. Mumbai Indians have now lost five out of their six matches and face a tough race to reach play-offs from here on.

“We have put ourselves in this situation, there is no one else to blame,” Jayawardene said. “Today was very disappointing. We just probably played the wicket thinking there is going to be demons out there. We just had to knock it around. We did not take any responsibility, so that part was quite disappointing. The dew came in as we expected, after 10 overs. No one took responsibility; that is quite sad.”

By the end, Hardik Pandya was the only established batsman playing along with the longish tail that Mumbai have this season. The usual aggressor had to quiet down due to the tough occasion that he faced. He could not rotate the strike either could he connect. Hardik was out for 3(19).

Mahela commented,”If people don’t evolve and improve, there is no progress. Young guys like Hardik will learn that and need to work harder; the talent alone will not get you, leading the game and thinking about the game, that’s the part they need to keep learning, and especially with international good bowlers coming and doing various things, you have to evolve.”

There has been much speculation already regarding the place of Kieron Pollard in the Mumbai team setup. Speaking about which Jayawardene said,”He is struggling a little bit, but we trusted with the system. You need to trust your players, you can’t chop and change just because you don’t fire. You have to go with that structure, and yes, eventually as a coach, I will have to make some calls, which I have to think about.”
