Mumbai Indians (MI) has earned its place as one of the most successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), clinching the title five times, a feat matched only by the reigning champions, Chennai Super Kings. A cornerstone of MI’s success lies in their team spirit, fostered by a unique approach to discipline within the squad.

In a recent Instagram post captioned “Aisi punishment nahi chahiye re baba (Don’t need this punishment),” MI unveiled one of their distinctive methods for maintaining camaraderie. The accompanying video showcased a playful punishment game orchestrated by the coaching staff.

Players like Luke Wood and Romario Shepherd were seen linking arms while their backs were turned to Mark Boucher, the former South African wicketkeeper. Boucher then directed other team members to aim volleyball shots at Wood, Shepherd, and their comrades, adding a humorous twist to the disciplinary action.

This isn’t the first time MI has employed creative penalties. Just earlier this month, they reintroduced their famous ‘punishment jumpsuits.’ Players like Ishan Kishan and Kumar Kartikeya sported Superman-themed jumpsuits, a penalty for tardiness to training or meetings.

It’s a quirky but effective way to instil discipline while maintaining team morale. On the field, MI has had a mixed start to IPL 2024. Despite a shaky beginning with three consecutive losses, they rallied back with two consecutive wins. However, their momentum was halted by a 20-run loss to Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium.

Captain Rohit Sharma’s valiant century wasn’t enough to secure victory. As they gear up for their next match against Punjab Kings, MI sits at the ninth spot in the standings with four points from six games.
