Former Indian opener, Murali Vijay has come hard on Sanjay Manjrekar for his on-air remarks during the second day’s play in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test between India and Australia in Nagpur. The incident occurred on Day 2 of the first India-Australia Test at the VCA stadium in Nagpur when a statistic about conversion rates in the longest format of the game was shown on television.

Sanjay Manjrekar was surprised to see the statistics on the screen showed that Vijay had the best conversion rate (the 50s to 100s) for India at home in Tests. Vijay has a conversion rate of 60%, putting him ahead of Mohammad Azharuddin, Polly Umrigar, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli on the list. “I am surprised to see Murali at the top,” Manjrekar said on air. Tweeting about the same Vijay wrote: “Some Mumbai ex players can never be appreciative of the south!”.

Vijay, who was probably watching the Test match, was enraged by Manjrekar’s remarks and took to Twitter, writing: “@sanjaymanjrekar “Wow, I’m surprised”. In another tweet, Vijay wrote: “Some Mumbai ex-players can never be appreciative of the south! #showsomelove #equality #fairplayforall @sanjaymanjrekar @BCCI”.

Even former India spinner and commentator Laxman Sivaramakrishnan also criticized Manjrekar over his on-air remark on Vijay. He tweeted, “Why surprised Sanjay Manjrekar? There was a time when Vijay and Pujara had the highest partnership average for the top order. Interesting comment.”

Notably, Murali Vijay decided to hang his boots from all forms of international cricket last month. The 38-year-old played 61 Tests for India, scoring 3982 runs at an average of 38.28 with 12 centuries and 15 half-centuries. He also appeared in 17 ODIs and 9 T20Is, scoring 339 and 169 runs, respectively.
