What Khan has done of late is nothing short of phenomenal. A match-winning double century in the quarter-final of the Ranji Trophy, a century in the final, all point to the fact that he can rise to the big occasion. His maiden first-class season fetched him 433 runs in three outings with a huge role to play in Mumbai’s title-winning campaign.

His 181-run innings against India A for India B in the Duleep Trophy pointed out that he is a composure person and skilful enough against top-notch players, which proves that he performs well under pressure.

The selection panel must have been impressed with Jaffer’s previous performances, which were also influenced by the Duleep Trophy and the forthcoming Irani Cup match between Rest of India and Ranji champions Mumbai. Says a BCCI insider, “Khan is an exceptionally talented player who has a great temperament. A few days back, he faced 373 balls in 62.1 overs-a technical and mental feat by any standards.”

The inclusion of Khan is part of the larger BCCI effort to groom young talent for the future. Along with him, Rajasthan’s left-arm spinner Manav Suthar will also be inducted into the side as the selectors are thinking of him as a replacement for many senior players like Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja.

Meanwhile, the Indian senior men’s team will engage in a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting on September 19. The selection though would be a straight fight between experienced KL Rahul and rising star Sarfaraz Khan for a place in the playing XI. A BCCI source, while maintaining that though losing recently, Rahul has played some crucial knocks in the recent past-a century in South Africa and an 86 in Hyderabad-his recent form will make him the likeliest starter.
