Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim has taken a sensational catch against Sri Lanka in the World Cup 2023 group match in New Delhi, leaving the world in awe. The catch is a contender for the Catch of the Tournament award. After Bangladesh won the toss and opted to field, Shoriful Islam got the ball moving against dangerous opener Kusal Perera.
Perera got going with a lovely cover drive, but Shoriful corrected his length quickly and got one to move away from Perera, who went for an expansive drive and paid the price for it. Mushfiqur Rahim moved towards his left and dived full length before grabbing the ball in front of the first slip’s face with his outstretched left hand. The catch was simply breathtaking, and it left the on-air commentators, including former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja, in awe.

“That is one of the best catches I have ever seen,” Ramiz Raja exclaimed. “Mushfiqur Rahim has flown to his left and taken a catch that very few wicketkeepers in the world could have taken.”

The catch was an important source of inspiration for Bangladesh, who have been below-par in the World Cup with 6 successive defeats in 7 matches so far. However, they went on to win the match against Sri Lanka by 5 wickets, and Rahim’s catch will be remembered as one of the highlights of the tournament.

There have been quite a few contenders for the catch of the tournament so far. India’s KL Rahul and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson have also taken some stunning catches, but Rahim’s catch is arguably the best of the lot. It will be interesting to see if Rahim can win the Catch of the Tournament award at the end of the tournament, but there is no doubt that he has already taken one of the catches of the decade.
