India all-rounder Naman Dhir suffered an ankle injury during the second ODI against West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 30. Dhir twisted his left ankle twice during the 36th over and immediately went down in pain, forcing the Indian physio to come onto the field. Although Dhir was able to walk off without assistance, the injury was a concern for India as the West Indies batting lineup continued to pile on the runs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal came on as the substitute fielder after Dhir left the field. Naman Dhir had bowled 6.1 overs before walking off, conceding runs without taking a wicket. He had earlier been close to claiming his maiden ODI wicket when Virat Kohli dropped a sharp chance at mid-wicket off Shai Hope. Hope, who was batting on 27 at the time, went on to make India pay for the missed opportunity by scoring a century.

The all-rounder made his ODI debut in the series opener, bowling five overs for 33 runs without taking a wicket. He did not get an opportunity to bat in that match as India comfortably chased down West Indies’ target after losing only two wickets.

Dhir had a more eventful outing in Guwahati before his injury. He took a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Keacy Carty and later completed another catch to remove John Campbell, who had smashed a sensational 101 off 68 balls. His contributions in the field were particularly important as India struggled to contain the West Indies batting attack.

India entered the second ODI with a 1-0 lead after winning the opening game by eight wickets. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 139 was the highlight of that victory. However, the second match has presented a significantly tougher challenge for Shubman Gill’s side.

India won the toss and elected to bowl first, with Auqib Nabi making his ODI debut. The hosts made an early breakthrough by dismissing Carty, but Campbell quickly shifted the momentum in West Indies’ favour. His aggressive 101 helped the visitors build a strong platform.

Shai Hope was given two chances during his innings, but India were unable to capitalise on either opportunity. The West Indies captain eventually reached his century and combined with Amir Jangoo for a substantial partnership. Jangoo also produced an impressive innings before being dismissed for 114 off 76 balls.

With West Indies reaching 348/5 after 42 overs, the visitors were firmly in control and targeting a total around the 400-run mark. The conditions could become even more challenging for India during the chase, with dew expected to play a role under the lights.

The focus will now be on Dhir’s fitness and whether he can return to the field or contribute with the bat if required. For India, the immediate challenge is to restrict West Indies before beginning what could be a demanding run chase in Guwahati.
