Cheteshwar Pujara formally announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Sunday, August 24, closing the chapter on one of India’s most dependable red-ball specialists. Known for his resilience and technical mastery, Pujara firmly established himself at No. 3 in India’s Test lineup, a position once held by the legendary Rahul Dravid. Over 155 innings at that spot, the Saurashtra batter scored 6,529 runs at an average of 44.41, cementing his place as one of the finest No. 3s in modern cricket.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain lauded Pujara for his unwavering contributions in the demanding No. 3 position. Speaking on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel, Hussain highlighted the rarity of true No. 3 batters in today’s game, noting that even top players like Joe Root and Shubman Gill often avoid the role due to its pressure and responsibility.

“A real old-school No. 3. And he had to take over from one of the all-time great No. 3s in Rahul Dravid. It’s something that’s a little bit lacking in international cricket,” Nasser Hussain said. “In our era, your No. 3 was your best player, whether it be Viv Richards, Ricky Ponting or Rahul Dravid. Not an easy position to do, but Pujara did it as well as anyone.”

Hussain further praised Pujara’s ability to anchor the innings and protect India’s middle order, particularly against the new ball. His calm temperament and patient style were instrumental in India’s historic Test series victories in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

“Another one of the old-school batters is gone. A bat-for-your-life type of player who produced phenomenal innings, especially in Australia. He protected the middle order, including the likes of Virat Kohli, from the new ball. Calm, quietly spoken, and incredibly thoughtful, Pujara’s presence was invaluable,” Nasser Hussain added.

With his retirement, Indian cricket loses a pillar of stability in the Test middle order, and fans will remember Pujara for his grit, technical brilliance, and unwavering commitment to the longest format of the game.
