Former England captain Nasser Hussain has said that England’s Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign feels like the end of an era for the team. Hussain’s comments come after England’s disappointing eight-wicket loss to Sri Lanka, which saw them slump to ninth place in the standings. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hussain said that the World Cup has proved to be a bridge too far for some England cricketers and that it feels like the end of an era. England has lost four of its first five matches in the 2023 World Cup.

“We are talking about some of the greatest players in our white-ball history but this has just turned out to be a bridge too far for some of them,” Nasser Hussain said. “I wouldn’t have changed the side before this tournament but I would definitely be thinking about changing it now because it does feel like the end of an era.”

Hussain went on to say that England’s performance in India does not take away from what this group of players have achieved. England won its first-ever World Cup title in 2019, defeating New Zealand in the final.

“That doesn’t take anything away from what this England side have achieved,” Nasser Hussain added. “We can be all doom and gloom and say ‘get rid of the lot of them’ but they have given us six or seven years of absolutely brilliant white-ball cricket.”

England now face the ominous prospect of being eliminated in the group stage of the tournament. They will now take on hosts India in their next match at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. This has now become a must-win game for England if they are to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Hussain’s comments reflect the growing sense of disappointment and frustration among England fans and pundits alike. England are the defending champions but they have been outplayed in most of their matches so far in the 2023 World Cup. It is clear that England needs to make some changes if they are to turn things around.

Nasser Hussain has suggested that some of the older players may need to make way for younger blood, but it remains to be seen what changes the selectors will make. England’s next match against India is a must-win game for them. If they lose, they will be eliminated from the tournament. It will be interesting to see how England responds to the pressure in this crucial match.
