Perth Scorchers fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile has been immediately taken to hospital after being hit with a bout of vertigo that forced him to go out of the field in Saturday’s KFC BBL match. He had just been hit for four by Harry Nielsen off the fifth ball of his final over late in the match when he signaled to the Scorchers’ bench for attention at the end of the over.

After having a discussion with Perth skipper Mitchell Marsh, Coulter-Nile delivered the sixth ball – which Nielsen hit for six over mid-wicket to help the Strikers break the back of a tricky run chase which led to a five-wicket win. The pacer then noticeably staggered before sinking to his hindquarters and sitting on the ground.

Coulter-Nile was quickly attended to by the Scorchers’ staff and the Cricket Australia doctor on duty, and after a short break was able to pick himself up and walk from the field unassisted. The Scorchers physio Chris Quinnell said the 31-year-old had suffered a “bad bout of vertigo”.

Talking about the same, Quinnell said, “Nathan was hit with a bad bout of vertigo at the end of his final bowling over during the game against the Adelaide Strikers. He was taken to hospital after the game as a precaution and will be monitored over the next few hours.”

Coulter-Nile had been resting up and rehydrating in the team dressing room after the match before the team decided on the precautionary hospital trip. He scalped his second wicket of the match in his fourth and final over, but his final two balls were hit for six and four as the Strikers raced towards a five-wicket victory that left the Scorchers bottom of the BBL|08 ladder.

The fast bowler, who was selected in Australia’s one-day international and Twenty20 squad to tour India from later this month, had earlier been a star performer, cracking 25 runs from just eight balls including three sixes and a four before taking 2-28 from his four overs.

His inclusion in the 15-man squad to tour India came after he was left out of the limited-overs internationals for the home summer with back issues.
