The veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was at his best in the opening game of the Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur. The 36-year-old picked up a sensational 5-wicket haul in the second innings and completely bamboozled Australia as India comfortably won the first Test by an innings and 132 runs. Meanwhile, a lot will depend on the performance of Nathan Lyon for Australia to make a comeback in the series.

The veteran spinner has enough experience and is considered a modern-day great, but he too would be under pressure at the moment as he is competing with R Ashwin. Despite that, the Aussie spinner revealed that he is not going to pin himself against the Indian spinner and also mentioned that he has been watching a lot of footage of Ashwin in order to learn from him.

During a recent chat with Star Sports, Nathan Lyon said, “I’m not going to pin myself against Ash (Ravichandran Ashwin). I think the way Ashwin has gone about it has been remarkable and his record speaks for himself. To be honest, I am a totally different bowler to Ash. Have I have sat down and watched a lot of footage of Ashwin before coming over here? Yes, a 100 percent.”

He further added, “I’ve spent a lot of time sitting at home in front of the laptop, driving my wife mad. It’s all about learning. The best thing about this game is that we are constantly learning, trying to grow and get better by watching your opposition and that’s one of the biggest learning curves.”

Ahead of the second Test in Delhi, Nathan Lyon stated that he has learned a lot from R Ashwin already. He also talked about the fact that there are certain skill sets that Ashwin possesses that he wants to learn to get better.

Explaining the same, Nathan Lyon said, “There’s a lot of talk. Lots he has taught me about. Sitting down and speaking to him, there’s been a lot that he’s taught me and that’s just not for here but even in Australia. There’s a couple of skillsets that Ash has which I would like to develop. That’s why I feel like I can still get better. So that’s what’s driving me.”
