Netizens Erupt as Rohit Sharma Smashes Historic Century In Lord’s ODI

The last few days in Indian cricket have revolved around one name: Rohit Sharma. Reports after India’s second ODI defeat to England suggested that the BCCI selectors had decided to move on from the veteran opener, prompting speculation that Sunday’s series decider at Lord’s could be his final ODI for India. The chatter grew so intense that BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia issued a clarification, saying Rohit would continue to play as long as he remained in the team’s plans.

Rohit, however, responded in the best possible way. Under pressure and with India’s long-term ODI plans already under scrutiny, the 39-year-old produced a sparkling century in the massive chase of 388 at Lord’s. In doing so, he became the first Indian batter to score an ODI hundred at the iconic venue, surpassing Sourav Ganguly’s previous best of 90 against

England in 2004. At 39 years and 80 days, Rohit also became the oldest player to score an ODI century at Lord’s and the oldest Indian to hit an international hundred at the ground across formats.

England, meanwhile, had piled on the pressure with a commanding 387/3 after Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell stitched together a stunning 192-run opening stand. Duckett led the charge with a brilliant 141, while Bethell added 91 off 93 balls to put India on the back foot early.

India’s inexperienced pace attack struggled to contain England’s surge. In Jasprit Bumrah’s absence due to a left-knee injury, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar lacked the control and cutting edge needed against a settled batting unit. Their combined ODI experience stood at just 51 matches, and England made full use of that gap.

Duckett and Bethell took 58 runs from the first 10 overs before accelerating sharply through the middle phase, leaving India’s bowlers scrambling for answers. The lack of a second specialist spinner also hurt, with Axar Patel conceding 61 runs in 10 overs while Kuldeep Yadav remained unused once again in a major white-ball contest under Gautam Gambhir’s tenure.
