Romario Shepherd etched his name into the IPL record books with a sensational display of power-hitting, smashing a 14-ball half-century against Chennai Super Kings at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. His whirlwind knock now stands as the joint-second-fastest fifty in IPL history. The fastest remains Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 13-ball effort against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023. Shepherd now shares the second spot with KL Rahul’s 2018 blitz against Delhi Capitals and Pat Cummins’ stunning knock against Mumbai Indians in 2022.

Earlier in the same match, Virat Kohli reclaimed the Orange Cap with a commanding 62 off just 33 deliveries. His innings, laced with five boundaries and five sixes, pushed him to the top of the run-scoring charts with 505 runs. At the start of the day, Gujarat Titans’ Sai Sudharsan was leading the standings, but Kohli’s form saw him leapfrog to first place from the fifth position.

The top five in the Orange Cap race now include Sai Sudharsan, Mumbai Indians’ Suryakumar Yadav, GT’s Jos Buttler, and Shubman Gill.

Kohli also reached a monumental personal milestone in the match by becoming the first player in IPL history to smash 300 sixes for a single franchise. He surpassed legends like Chris Gayle (263 sixes for RCB), Rohit Sharma (262 for MI), Kieron Pollard (258 for MI), and MS Dhoni (257 for CSK).

As for the game itself, CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bowl first. Chennai stuck with their previous playing XI, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru made one change—bringing in Lungi Ngidi for Josh Hazlewood.

RCB, still in the race for a playoff berth, are looking to consolidate their position on the points table, while CSK have already bowed out of the competition. Notably, RCB had previously defeated CSK by 50 runs earlier in the season.
