India’s big-match player Abhishek Sharma finally delivered on the grandest stage. After a quiet run through most of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the Indian opener produced a stunning counterattack in the final against New Zealand national cricket team at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Sharma smashed a breathtaking half-century in just 18 balls, registering the fastest fifty of the tournament and giving India national cricket team a flying start.

Coming into the final under pressure after a string of low scores, Sharma flipped the narrative in spectacular fashion. The left-hander took charge from the outset, attacking the New Zealand bowlers with fearless strokeplay. His 18-ball fifty broke the tournament record previously shared by Dasun Shanaka, Aiden Markram, Shimron Hetmyer, Finn Allen, and Jacob Bethell, all of whom had reached the milestone in 19 deliveries earlier in the competition.
Sharma eventually departed for a blistering 52 off just 21 balls, falling to Rachin Ravindra on the first ball of the eighth over. By then, however, the damage had already been done, with India firmly on the front foot.

Alongside him, Sanju Samson played the perfect supporting role. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter matched Sharma’s attacking intent as the pair dismantled New Zealand’s bowling attack during the Powerplay. The duo raced to 92 runs inside the first six overs, putting India in complete control early in the title clash.
Earlier, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to exploit any early assistance. Instead, the decision backfired as the Indian openers launched a relentless assault, peppering the boundaries with crisp fours and towering sixes. At one stage, Sharma had raced to 51 off just 19 balls with six boundaries and three sixes, while Samson contributed a quickfire 33 from 17 deliveries.

For India, this final marks a continuation of their impressive record in the tournament. After defeating South Africa national cricket team in the 2024 final in Barbados, India are chasing another historic title. They previously won the inaugural edition in 2007 and now have the chance to become the first team to lift the T20 World Cup trophy three times.
New Zealand, meanwhile, are chasing their maiden title. The Black Caps finished runners-up in 2021 after losing to Australia national cricket team in Dubai and are eager to finally cross the finish line. With over 100,000 fans packed into the world’s largest cricket stadium and a batting-friendly surface on offer, the stage could hardly be bigger—and Abhishek Sharma ensured India seized the early momentum in style.
