Pakistan entered the two-match Test series against Bangladesh as firm favourites, playing on home turf and expected to dominate. However, the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh squad, despite facing significant challenges due to violent unrest in their home country that disrupted their preparations, delivered a remarkable performance, stunning Pakistan and comfortably securing the series win. Pakistan’s performance under Shan Masood’s captaincy was, to say the least, underwhelming.
Their strategy, particularly in the first Test, backfired as they fielded four pacers on pitches that didn’t offer much support for seam bowling. The batting lineup fared no better, struggling throughout both matches. In the second Test, there were brief moments of hope when Saim Ayub, Shan Masood, and Agha Salman showed flashes of brilliance in the second innings, each scoring half-centuries. Yet, none could convert those starts into a century, leaving Pakistan in a vulnerable position.

On the bowling front, Pakistan’s first innings in the second Test saw some success, with Khurram Shahzad taking six wickets. However, Bangladesh’s Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz mounted a strong resistance, turning the game around after Bangladesh was reduced to 25/6 at one point. Their resilience shifted the momentum in Bangladesh’s favor, and Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to regain control.
In the third innings, Bangladesh’s bowlers, Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana, delivered a ruthless performance, claiming five and four wickets respectively, and dismissing Pakistan for just 172 runs. This left Bangladesh with a target of 185 runs, which they chased down with relative ease. Openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam laid a solid foundation with a 58-run partnership, and contributions from Zakir (40) and captain Shanto (38) brought Bangladesh closer to victory. Despite Pakistan’s desperate efforts with the ball, Bangladesh secured a six-wicket win, sealing the series.

This defeat puts considerable pressure on Shan Masood, whose captaincy is now under scrutiny ahead of the upcoming series against England. Senior batter Babar Azam, already facing criticism for his recent performances, failed to step up in this series, further exacerbating concerns. As Pakistan grapples with these challenges, Bangladesh celebrates their first away Test series win since 2021, marking a significant achievement for the team.
Social media, particularly X (formerly known as Twitter), buzzed with reactions to Bangladesh’s impressive victory.
