Samson’s innings was not just about breaking records but also about delivering under immense pressure. With this knock, he became only the third batter in T20 World Cup history—after Virat Kohli and Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi—to score a half-century in both the semifinal and the final of the same edition. His remarkable consistency throughout the tournament helped him finish with 321 runs, the most by any batter in a single T20 World Cup edition, surpassing Kohli’s previous record.

The foundation for India’s massive total was laid much earlier by Abhishek Sharma, who finally found form when it mattered the most. The aggressive left-hander tore into the New Zealand attack and raced to a blistering half-century in just 18 balls. It was the fastest fifty of the 2026 T20 World Cup, surpassing the 19-ball efforts recorded by Aiden Markram, Jacob Bethell, and Shimron Hetmyer earlier in the tournament. Notably, Abhishek’s knock also became the fastest fifty ever scored in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

India’s explosive opening partnership with Samson and Abhishek completely dismantled the New Zealand bowling attack during the powerplay, setting the tone for the rest of the innings. Even after Abhishek’s departure, Samson continued to dominate the bowlers with his fluent stroke play before eventually falling to James Neesham for 89.
