Kohli, who was celebrating his 35th birthday, was in sublime form as he stroked his 49th ODI century, equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most hundreds in the format. The Indian talisman paced his innings perfectly, reaching his century in 121 balls with 10 fours and a six. He was ably supported by Shreyas Iyer, who chipped in with a valuable 77.

After Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave Team India a flying start, Kohli and Iyer took over and consolidated the innings. The duo put on a 134-run partnership for the third wicket, which laid the foundation for India’s massive total. Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja provided the finishing touches with quickfire cameos of 22 and 29 respectively.

South Africa’s chase never really got off the ground as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja ran riot with the ball, picking up three wickets each. Jadeja, in particular, was unplayable, bowling with great guile and accuracy. He finished with figures of 5/33 in nine overs.

South Africa’s batting was simply not up to par. They lost wickets too quickly and never really looked like chasing down India’s total. Their bowlers also struggled to contain the Indian batsmen. Overall, it was a comprehensive victory for Team India. They are the clear favorites to win the Cricket World Cup this year.
