Indian cricket fans were left fuming after Arshdeep Singh was once again benched for Harshit Rana in the T20I setup, sparking a wave of criticism across social media. The decision came ahead of India’s five-match T20I series opener against Australia on Wednesday, October 29, where skipper Suryakumar Yadav opted to field Rana and Jasprit Bumrah as his pace duo. The spin attack was led by Kuldeep Yadav, supported by Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel, while Shivam Dube provided the all-round support in Canberra.

Suryakumar Yadav did not reveal a specific reason behind Arshdeep’s omission but hinted that team selection was based on the conditions and balance of the side. “It’s a good headache to have so many options. The guys missing out are Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, and Nitish Kumar Reddy,” Surya said at the toss.

Arshdeep, who last featured in the Asia Cup 2025 clash against Sri Lanka, has been one of India’s most consistent performers in the shortest format. The left-arm seamer has represented India in 65 T20Is, claiming 101 wickets at an impressive average of 18.76 and an economy rate of 8.37. Across all T20s, he has bagged 230 wickets in 175 matches, proving his value as a dependable death bowler.

In comparison, Harshit Rana is still new to the international circuit, with just three T20I appearances and three wickets to his name. The 23-year-old Delhi pacer has taken 48 wickets in 41 domestic T20s at an average of 25.45 and an economy rate of 9.47. However, his IPL performances under Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship have seemingly earned him the selectors’ faith, placing him ahead of Arshdeep for now.

Adding to India’s selection woes, Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out of the first three T20Is due to a left quadriceps injury and subsequent neck spasms. India, already reeling from a 1-2 ODI series loss to Australia, are under pressure to bounce back strongly.

The omission of Arshdeep Singh has not gone down well with fans, who have taken to social media to question the logic behind overlooking one of India’s best T20 specialists.
