One of the biggest highlights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 retentions ahead of the mega-auction is Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) deciding to release Rashid Khan. November 30 was the final date for the existing eight IPL franchises to finalize their player retentions ahead of the mega auction before IPL 2022.

Some of the recent reports have suggested that Rashid Khan was looking to be the first retention of SRH, which would have fetched him INR 16 crores had SRH retained four players, INR 15 crores in case of three retentions, or INR 14 crores in case of two retentions. However, the SRH management had decided to go with skipper, Kane Williamson as the first retention.

Agreeing to be retained as the second player would have meant Rashid could have, at best, received INR 11 Crores (three retentions) or INR 10 Crores (two retentions). However, he was expecting a higher paycheck, which he can now be getting if he gets to the mega auction.

As for the other positions, SRH went with the uncapped duo of Abdul Samad and Umran Malik. Malik, who played a solitary List A game and one T20 for Jammu and Kashmir, was included in the SRH squad as a net bowler but was drafted into the main squad after T Natarajan contracted with Covid-19 and was ruled out.

On the other hand, Hard-hitting all-rounder Abdul Samad has been a revelation for the team since his debut in 2020. Meanwhile, Rashid will be expected to be approached by both the two new franchises. If not picked there, he will head into the auction pool, with all 10 teams looking to buy his services.

Even though hiring Rashid back for an amount lesser than the retention fees is unlikely, it is not hard to predict SRH will be eyeing to buy back the leggie on the auction table. So far, in 76 IPL matches, Rashid Khan has scalped 93 wickets at 20.56 and a miserly economy of 6.33. In his overall career, Rashid has 400 wickets at 17.55 from 289 T20s.
