The newly appointed Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Devajit Saikia, has raised concerns over India’s recent struggles in red-ball cricket. Saikia acknowledged the challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of returning the Indian Test team to its former dominance. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, he admitted that the consecutive Test series losses to New Zealand and Australia have exposed shortcomings that need immediate attention.
Devajit Saikia assured that the BCCI is consulting with cricketing experts to identify solutions. He stressed the importance of taking a step-by-step approach, with an immediate focus on the white-ball series against England, followed by preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai.
“It’s a significant challenge because our recent performances in Test cricket, particularly against Australia and New Zealand, have been disappointing. Our immediate priority is the England series, especially in the T20 format, before focusing on the Champions Trophy. We’ve had extensive discussions over the past two days to streamline processes and address the gaps,” Devajit Saikia said during a press conference at the BCCI headquarters.

He added, “We are seeking expert opinions and aiming for positive outcomes from these exercises. Overcoming our drawbacks is crucial. While the England series is our immediate challenge, the Champions Trophy remains a key focus. I aim to build on the foundation laid by ICC chairman and former BCCI secretary Jay Shah.”
Saikia, who was elected unopposed as the BCCI secretary, brings a diverse background in cricket, law, and administration. Before his appointment, he held a review meeting with captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to evaluate the team’s recent performances.
A former First-Class cricketer for Assam, Saikia played as a wicketkeeper in four matches between 1990 and 1991. After retiring from cricket, he pursued law, practising at the Gauhati High Court. His administrative acumen was evident during his tenure with the Assam Cricket Association, where he organized IPL matches and warm-up games for the 2023 ODI World Cup in Guwahati.
