CA chief executive Nick Hockley announced a desire to stand down by the end of the next cricket season, bringing to an end a glittering tenure of almost 13 years in Australian cricket. Hockley has spent the last five years working as CA chief executive and will likely depart the role by no later than the end of March 2025 – or perhaps a little later – depending on how long it takes for his replacement to be appointed.

Nick Hockley took up the role of interim chief executive in June 2020 before his permanent appointment as CEO eleven months later. No doubt, one of the most defining moments of his period at the helm of CA has been his astute management of the ship during the tumultuous phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. During his tenure, CA has established firm foundations for growth, including the adoption of a wide-ranging, comprehensive five-year strategy and securing key media agreements with Seven West Media and Foxtel Group, in addition to Disney Star in India.

Key to his success during this period was the new player Memorandum of Understanding, which included a massive 66 percent pay increase for female professional cricketers, with the Australian Cricketers’ Association. He has also overseen a revitalization of the Big Bash League under his leadership.

“This has been a tough decision, but coming off what is shaping up to be a blockbuster summer and with our strategic plan well-progressed, this is the right time for me to pursue another challenge while giving the Board plenty of time to find its next CEO to build on the strong foundations now in place,” said Nick Hockley during a press conference.

“This is not the time for goodbyes, as I am absolutely focused on the season ahead and supporting the Board on succession and a smooth transition.”

Internationally, Hockley presided over an extraordinary period of success for Australia’s national cricket teams. These will feature the first visit of an Australian team to Pakistan in more than two decades, as well as winning and retaining both the women’s and men’s Ashes.

Other ICC trophies include both men’s and women’s Cricket World Cups in 2022 and 2023, respectively, the men’s and women’s T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2023, respectively, the World Test Championship in 2023, and the Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2024.  On top of this, Australian performance secured gold in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Nick Hockley joined Australian Cricket in October 2012 as General Manager Commercial & Marketing for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, a tournament that went on to attract more than 1 million attendees and deliver huge economic impact. Following a few months as Head of Commercial Projects, Hockley was appointed CEO of the Local Organising Committee for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, hosting the record-breaking success of the Women’s T20 World Cup with a historic final at the MCG.
