BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has firmly dismissed speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, stating that there is “no question” of the India captain retiring from international cricket. His remarks come amid growing reports suggesting Rohit could be nearing the end of his ODI career ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Rumours intensified after claims emerged that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir had informed Rohit that he was no longer part of India’s long-term plans for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. However, the veteran opener responded in the best possible fashion by smashing a superb 138 off 110 balls in the third ODI against England at Lord’s. Although India ended up losing the match, Rohit’s innings was a timely reminder of his class and ability to perform on the biggest stage.

Addressing the speculation, Rajeev Shukla made it clear that the BCCI has not discussed Rohit’s retirement and that the reports circulating across media platforms are baseless.

“Rohit Sharma is a part of our team and is continuing to play. The things being circulated in the media and on social media have no meaning. As of now, there is no question of his retirement,” Rajeev Shukla told reporters.

The BCCI vice-president also expressed confidence in the current Indian leadership group, stressing that team selection remains the responsibility of the selectors and that there is no need for unnecessary changes while the side continues to produce positive results.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the decision on who stays in the team and who does not rests with the selectors. The Indian team is performing well and winning matches, so there is no need for any changes at present,” he added.

Rohit’s century at Lord’s carried extra significance after modest scores in the opening two matches had reignited questions about his place in the ODI setup. His match-winning knock showcased that he still has plenty to offer despite being 38 years old. Shukla’s statement also comes amid reports claiming Rohit was unhappy with the speculation surrounding his future and had sought clarity from BCCI officials.

While the board has publicly backed its captain, discussions around India’s long-term ODI planning are expected to continue, with younger players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal viewed as potential options for the future. For now, however, the BCCI has made its position clear—Rohit Sharma remains an integral part of India’s ODI plans. Greater clarity over his long-term future is likely to emerge during India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies in September, which could offer further insight into the team’s roadmap towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
