Exactly 26 years ago, Alec Stewart, former England captain, scored his highest Test score against Pakistan during the first Test of Pakistan’s tour of England in 1992 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. In which was the fourth of his 15 Test centuries, it came against a formidable Pakistan bowling line-up which comprised of Waqar Younis, Aaqib Javed, and Mushtaq Ahmed.

Graham Gooch, the then English captain, had won the toss and chose to field. Perhaps, it was the weather conditions which made him put the opposition in to bat first. Pakistan’s playing eleven was comprised of three debutants in Aamer Sohail, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Ata-ur-Rehman.

Incessant rains made sure that almost no play happened on the first two days of the Test match. Each of Pakistan’s top three batsmen got starts on Day 3 but none of them was successful enough to convert it into big innings. Saleem Malik walked in to bat at No. 5 at 110-3. He and captain Javed Miandad stitched a 180-run unbeaten partnership as Pakistan finished Day 3 at 290-3.

The following day, both Miandad (153*) and Malik (165) scored individual hundreds as Pakistan scored 446-4 dec. in 137 overs. With bowling figures of 33-6-121-4, Phil DeFreitas was the pick of the English bowlers.

For England, captain Gooch and Stewart walked in to face the new ball. If Gooch (8) was dismissed by Javed cheaply, Stewart looked determined enough to score consecutive Test centuries. He had a scored a century in the last Test that he played against New Zealand at Wellington in February the same year.

Having walked backed to the pavilion unbeaten on 90, he achieved the feat on the following morning. He stitched a 227-run partnership with Robin Smith (127) for the fourth wicket. Stewart ended up scoring 190 (261) with the help of 31 fours. His innings was a blend of grace and attacking instincts.
