Exactly three years ago, Ross Taylor scored his 13th ODI century against England during the second ODI of New Zealand’s tour of England in 2015 at The Oval, London. In which was a run-fest on a flat batting wicket, over 750 runs were scored as New Zealand eventually won by 13 runs (D/L Method).

Having lost the first ODI by a massive 210 runs at Birmingham, Brendon McCullum, the then New Zealand captain, had won the toss and chose to bat. Bowling his first over, Liam Plunkett brought an end to Brendon McCullum’s (39) blitz in the eighth over. The Kiwis had raced to 77-1 in the first 10 overs.

Ben Stokes ended a 53-run stand for the second wicket between Martin Guptill (50) and Kane Williamson. Taylor, who came in to bat at No. 4, stitched a 121-run partnership for the third wicket with Williamson (93). Just an over after Williamson got out, Taylor hit a six off Adil Rashid to complete his half-century (off 52 balls).

After crossing the 50-run mark, Taylor changed gears in a bid to post a formidable total. Fine cameos by Grant Elliott (32) and Luke Ronchi (33) aided New Zealand to score 398-5 in 50 overs. Taylor ended up scoring 119* (96) with the help of 10 fours & four sixes. He completed his century in the 48th over with a single off Steven Finn. With bowling figures of 9-0-66-2, Steven Finn was the pick of the English bowlers.

After a rain-interruption, England were required to chase 379 runs from 46 overs. They eventually scored 365-9 in 46 overs. Captain Eoin Morgan, who came in to bat at No. 4, top-scored with 88 (86) with the help of six fours and six sixes. With bowling figures of 9-0-86-3, Nathan McCullum was the highest wicket-taker for the visitors.
