Exactly 13 years ago, Inzamam-ul-Haq, the then Pakistani captain, scored his 22nd Test century against West Indies during the second Test of Pakistan’s tour of West Indies in 2005 at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica. The innings played an instrumental role in Pakistan setting a formidable target against the hosts.
Having lost the first Test by 276 runs at Bridgetown, Haq won the toss and chose to bat in the second Test. On the back of Younis Khan’s ninth Test century, 106 (260), with the help of 14 fours, Pakistan crossed the 300-run mark for the first time in the series, scoring 374-10 in 100.3 overs.
To restrict Pakistan under the 400-run mark, West Indies’ Corey Collymore registered his third Test five-wicket haul, his second at Sabina Park. With bowling figures of 27.3-5-78-7, he was the pick of the bowlers for the home team. Brian Lara, who came in to bat at No. 4 for West Indies, scored his 30th Test century, 153 (298), with the help of 20 fours and two sixes as West Indies scored 404-10 in 112 overs. With bowling figures of 22-4-64-4, Shabbir Ahmed was the highest wicket-taker for Pakistan in the first innings.
In the first innings, West Indies were successful in gaining a short but crucial 30-run lead. It was in the second innings that Haq scored an unbeaten century which aided Pakistan to post a handsome total on the board. Demoted to No. 5 from No. 4 in the first innings, Haq ended up scoring 117* (194) with the help of 14 fours.
With the way in which Pakistan’s lower-order crumbled, had Haq not scored a century, Pakistan would have ended up posting a very achievable target. Pakistan scored 309-10 in 77.5 overs as West Indies were set a target of 280 runs to win the match.
Pakistan won the match by 136 runs as West Indies were bundled out for 143-10 in 52.5 overs. With bowling figures of 20-8-46-5 on the final day, Danish Kaneria has adjourned the ‘Man of the Match’.
